At the 2025 NCS Zone Competition on June 5, 2025, Conuma’s 6-Person Surface Mine Rescue and 3-Person First Aid teams demonstrated remarkable growth, showcasing the skill development achieved since the 2024 event. The Surface Mine Rescue Team competed in a challenging set of events including written assessments, rope rescue, firefighting, and first aid. Following a rare three-way tie in the overall aggregate, Conuma narrowly missed qualifying for the provincial competition—falling short by just 8 points out of a possible 1800.

Still – the team brought home multiple Task Awards, including Best Rope Task, Best Field Task, and Best Aggregate – Bench and Written.

Congratulations to the 6-Person Mine Rescue team!  Shane Muise – Captain (Quintette), Chris Taylor – Vice Captain (Trend Roman), Adam Baron (Willow Creek), Steve Terry (Willow Creek), Taylor Olsen (Quintette), Adam Hall (Quintette), and Alex Poworznik (Quintette).

Conuma’s 3-person First Aid Team secured 1st place out of five teams at the NCS Zone competition, earning a spot at the BC Provincials. Taylor Olsen received individual awards for Best Captain and Best Written, while Selena Logue was awarded Best Spare Written. At the provincial competition held on June 7th, the team placed 3rd overall, with Selena Logue once again earning Best Spare Written.

Congratulations to the 3-Person First Aid Team! Taylor Olsen – Captain (Quintette), Adam Hall (Quintette), Alex Poworoznik (Quintette), and Selena Logue – Spare (Willow Creek).

Our Mine Rescue teams exemplify the very best of who we are, not just through their impressive performance at competitions, but in the way they show up for our communities. Their commitment to excellence, safety, and service reflects a deep sense of responsibility and pride. We couldn’t be prouder of this team and the leadership they demonstrate on and off our sites.” said Svend Nielsen, Director, Health & Emergency Response at Conuma

Conuma’s Mine Rescue team members are not only dedicated to mine safety—they also provide critical support to the local communities. Under mutual aid agreements with Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd, and a standing offer of support to the BC Wildfire Service, Conuma’s Mine Rescue teams have responded to multiple emergency events this year, including:

Mast Road Wildland Fire (May 2025): Conuma deployed six mine rescue members and one medic with the wildland unit, fire truck, command unit, and two water tankers to support the Tumbler Ridge Fire Department and BC Wildfire Service to contain what could have been a devastating blaze just 6km outside of town.

Conuma is immensely proud of the Mine Rescue teams’ accomplishments. Their commitment to safety, readiness, and service exemplifies the very best of Conuma’s values.
